24 Hours in NYC: A Royal Trip on a Commoner’s Budget

On the Megabus!

With the crisp feel of autumn in the air, it was the perfect time for a much needed change of scenery and escape from our day to day routine. Fall is one of the best times to take a romantic getaway, and nowhere is as romantic as New York City. A weekend trip to the Big Apple is just what the doctor ordered.

We departed Philadelphia on a Sunday morning and made our way up to New York on the Megabus ($11 per person). We arrived at the Hudson Hotel ($132 Standard Double) a little early. So, we checked in and checked out all that the hotel had to offer. The dramatic green illuminated escalator carried us to the second floor lobby.

The window in the lobby looked out onto a beautiful courtyard, which prompted further investigation…

This picturesque setting was a little too comfy. So, we decided to hang out for a bit and take advantage of the photo opp…

And…

Our room was ready. So, up we went to the 17th floor. After a walk down the long corridor we had arrived and were pleasantly surprised to find that our Standard Double had magically turned into a Deluxe King! Thanks for the upgrade!

We ditched our bags, hopped on the subway where we caught a few moments of a very cool jazz band (only in New York)!

We headed to the Spotted Pig in the West Village. I wanted David to taste for himself that burger ($17) that I had been raving about for years!

It did not disappoint!

Feeling euphoric and bloated…

After lunch and a walk through the Village, we headed back to the hotel. The lobby looked even prettier at dusk.

Just beyond the lobby, we stumbled upon this cozy billiard room…

After a little siesta, it was time for dinner at John’s Of 12th in the East Village. Our good friend, Pierre Robert happened to also be in the city and decided to join us for dinner. The restaurant had a cool vibe. Kinda felt like Tony Soprano’s kind of place.

We went old-school with Chicken Parm ($14.95) and Spaghetti Bolognese ($14.95). Pierre ordered off the Vegan Menu. Pierre and I shared a nice bottle of Montepulciano ($19).

Thoroughly full and totally exhausted, we hailed a cab and headed back to the hotel. There’s that great lobby again!

Man, that bed was comfortable! I slept like a baby!

I loved the sheer curtains on the window that looked into the bathroom. For those on the modest side, there is a full curtain that can be drawn for privacy.

The next morning, we headed back down to the Village for yet another meal!

We skipped breakfast to help justify the indulgence of lunch at our favorite New York pizza joint, John’s Pizzeria on Bleeker Street.

We ordered a large pizza ($14). David got anchovies and extra garlic on his half. I went plain…wanted to enjoy the simple pleasure of that gooey cheese and tomato sauce on that thin crispy crust. HEAVEN!

David was eyeballing my last piece. So, being that I am trying to keep my girlish figure, I begrudgingly gave it to him.

After a leisurely walk through the streets of Manhattan, we stopped back at the Hudson Hotel to pick up our bags.

It was a wonderful and romantic getaway. We will be back soon, New York. And will definitely be returning to the Hudson  Hotel.

Cheers!
