24 Hours in NYC: Honeymoon (part 1) ~

So Much Love, So Much Food, Soho Good!

After 34 years of friendship, 8 years in love, and almost 3 years of engagement, we decided to tie the knot on October 7, 2017. With David’s rock-n-roll schedule with The Hooters and David Uosikkinen’s In The Pocket, we waited a month to finally celebrate our honeymoon.

If you’ve been following our travels for the past several years, you’ll know that our favorite place for a romantic getaway is New York City.

We were going to spend a few days in the Big Apple. But, then Springsteen on Broadway tickets went on sale. So, we decided to cut our honeymoon into two separate trips…part 1, to wine and dine our way across the city; and part 2, to see Springsteen on Broadway. This is our Honeymoon (part 1)…

I have been wanting to try Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s ABC Kitchen for ages. Since we arrived an hour early for lunch, I thought it would be fun to walk through ABC Carpet’s six floors of furniture, housewares and carpet while we waited.

The top floor was filled with magnificent carpets that sprawled a full city block. Each floor was more expansive than the next, and such cool stuff!

Even the elevator was cool!

When we sat down for lunch at ABC Kitchen, it was loud and packed with people. But, that just added to the vibe of the restaurant. They gave us a cozy table off to the side.

David had their version of a Turkey Club on an amazing homemade roll. I had the burger. They also sent over a dish of colorful beets in yogurt. It was fab!

We arrived at our favorite NYC hotel, the Soho Grand at about 3pm.

We told them that we were celebrating our honeymoon and asked if it was possible to get an upgrade. And like last time, we were given a corner room…

…With a great view!

They also gave us a complimentary drink in “The Salon.” I went for a wonderful glass of the Billecart-Salmon Brut, Champagne.

We had a cozy corner table and enjoyed great view of The Salon at the Soho Grand.

After a glass of bubbly, we relaxed a bit and then headed out for dinner. I had done some research on where to go and was very excited about trying Emilio’s Ballato.

The old-school Italian restaurant in Little Italy is known for being a hotspot —  It has hosted celebs like President Obama, Lenny Kravitz, Billy Joel, Tom Hanks and David Bowie.

We fell in love at first sight! We started with a Caesar Salad. David said it was THE BEST Caesar he’s ever had! It was simply delicious.

NYC Honeymoon pt1-1325 David went for Spaghetti and Meatballs. I opted for my comfort food favorite, Chicken Parm.

The owner Emilio Vitolo, who has the reputation of being a bit of a curmudgeon, sat at the table next to us. So, we had the opportunity to chat with him. He is a man of few words. But, was very friendly and even had the server bring out packages of the premium pasta they use. It wasn’t for sale. It was just for us to see that he uses only the best ingredients.

Emilio also told us that the cheesecake was the way to go! So, we went!

We had such a great meal and such a great time, that I would not hesitate to go back again and again!

After dinner, we grabbed a Lyft and headed back to the Soho Grand. We stopped for our regular photo on the hotel stairs leading up to the lobby 🙂

Then, we climbed into our great big, comfy bed and enjoyed the beautiful view of the New York skyline.

We slept in and lingered in bed while it drizzled outside…

…Then went down to The Salon in the lobby for some coffee.

We decided to walk over to the Lafayette in NoHo. It was recommended by the hotel concierge and described as a French Bistro along the lines of Balthazar. Since we had already been to Balthazar, we thought we would try something new.

On my quest to find the perfect burger, I ordered the Brisket Burger au Poivre, with mushroom duxelles.

NYC Honeymoon pt1-1393

It sure was yummy. But, I haven’t found a burger yet that tops Rauol’s. David decided on the Roasted Prime Rib Sandwich on a pretzel bun with horseradish.

His sandwich was also delicious! But, with two ginger beer sodas and a tip, the bill came to $78. We thought it was a bit pricy for what we had.

On our walk back to the hotel, we stumbled upon Mercer Street Books and Records. Naturally, we went inside.

NYC Honeymoon pt1-1400

David found a classic Jeff Beck record and bought it up. I was more into shopping for boots! We both walked back to the hotel very happy 😉

As our 24 hour honeymoon in NYC was coming to an end, we stopped one last time in the lobby of the Soho Grand. We just love it here and are made to feel special each time we stay.

NYC Honeymoon pt1-1364

We’ve been there so many times that the even valet remembers us!

We had a wonderful “Honeymoon (part 1)” in the Big Apple…

…And look forward to “Honeymoon (part 2).”

See you in December, when we come back to see The Boss on Broadway!
